HCS Roundtable: Big 12 Week 9 Locks of the Week

NCAA Football: Texas Christian at Colorado

The Big 12 has been among the most unpredictable conferences in America this season, and that has really shown up on the boards in Vegas through seven weeks of football.

Coming into Week 9, underdogs in Big 12 play are 9-12 straight up, and just one team remains undefeated in conference play, as TCU sits atop the league at 7-0.

Despite this crazy season, the Heartland College Sports staff has weathered the weekly storm to stay ahead in its locks of the week. Through seven weeks, their combined record is 19-10-1, with Pete sitting at 7-1 on the year. Let’s see if they can keep things going here in Week 9.

PETE MUNDO (RECORD: 7-1)

GAME: No. 9 Oklahoma State at No 22. Kansas State (-1)

Mike Gundy, in the words of Rodney Dangerfield, “gets no respect”. Oklahoma State has been an underdog in three of their four Big 12 games this season. They are 3-1 in conference play. Here they are an underdog again going to K-State, against a team that has serious questions at quarterback heading into this one. Plus, K-State’s defense is solid, but they have played three of the top 5 lowest-scoring offenses in the Big 12 so far this season, so are their strong defensive numbers a bit skewed? Possibly. Lastly, back to Gundy, he is 15-2 against the spread as an underdog since 2018. What gives? Mike Gundy, my ride or die!

LOCK: Oklahoma State (+1)

BRYAN CLINTON (RECORD: 5-2-1)

GAME: No. 7 TCU (-6.5) at West Virginia

Speaking of the Horned Frogs, their line against a 3-4 West Virginia is another example of the depth in the Big 12. An undefeated, top-ten team is less than a touchdown favorite against a team that is 1-3 in conference play? While I do believe that West Virginia is better than its record indicates, I don’t see them taking this game down to the wire with TCU. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did, but this feels like a game that TCU should win by 10 to 14 points, if not more. Sure, West Virginia has the home-field advantage, but it’s without its top rusher and was last seen sleepwalking in Lubbock. Give me Hypnotoad.

LOCK: TCU (-6.5)

DEREK DUKE (RECORD: 3-3)

GAME: No. 7 TCU (-6.5) at West Virginia

I have been burned by West Virginia a few times this season and I hope that doesn’t happen again in Morgantown. Last time, the Mountaineers were home they were able to knock off Baylor in a stunning upset. However, TCU is a good football team who has done a good job of taking care of the football this season. We all saw what West Virginia looked like against Texas Tech. That looked like a football team who was ready for the season to be over. I am banking on another West Virginia no-show on Saturday as TCU covers.

LOCK: TCU (-6.5)

MATTHEW POSTINS (RECORD: 4-4)

GAME: Baylor at Texas Tech (-1.5)

As the least inclined to gamble in this group, I know that Texas Tech was a 1.5-point favorite in the opening line. I figure there’s a good chance that if Texas Tech wins, it will win by more than 1.5 points. So, the Red Raiders are my lock. You can see my record above. Buyer beware.

LOCK: Texas Tech (-1.5)
