After nearly two years away from basketball, Kansas State’s Keyontae Johnson was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the first week of the 2022-23 season.
In addition, Baylor guard Adam Flagler was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.
Johnson made his return to college basketball last week after transferring from Florida to Kansas State. While at Florida, Johnson had to step away from the game due to a medical emergency.
He helped the Wildcats and new coach Jerome Tang go 2-0 for the week. He scored 13 points including three 3-pointers, to go with four assists and two rebounds in a team-high 26 minutes vs. UTRGV in the opener.
In a road win at California, Johnson scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting with a game-high nine rebounds and two steals in a team-high 33 minutes.
Flagler, one of the most experienced guards in the Big 12, wrapped up a 2-0 week for the Bears by leading the league in field goal percentage (.650/13-for-20) and 3-point field-goal percentage (.667/8-for-12). He also made all five of his free throws. He averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 assists.
Dating back to last season, the senior guard has scored in double figures in 24 of his last 26 games and made four-plus 3-pointers in back-to-back games for the second time in his Baylor career.
Flagler opened the season with 21 points, eight assists and a pair of steals against Mississippi Valley State. Flagler notched 18 points and five assists against Norfolk State while playing a team-high 34 minutes.
