Kansas State’s Marquis Nowell is Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

Kansas State's Keyontae Johnson, Markquis Nowell and Nae'Quan Tomlin

Kansas State guard Markquis Nowell is the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third week of the 2022-23 season.

In addition, Iowa State guard Jaren Holmes was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.

This is the first time either player has earned a weekly conference honor. It’s the second time a Kansas State player has been recognized this season. Keyontae Johnson was named the Newcomer of the Week for the first week of the season.

Nowell and the Wildcats won the Cayman Islands Classic last week and Nowell was the tournament’s most valuable player. During the tournament he averaged 18.7 points, nine assists and 3.7 rebounds. He became the first Kansas State player to have double-digit assists in back-to-back games and the second K-State player in history to have a 25-point, 10-assists game, joining Seve Henson, who did it in 1989. Nowell had 29 points and 11 assists in an overtime win over Nevada. Kansas State remains undefeated going into this week’s action.

Holmes, who transferred to the Cyclones from St. Bonaventure, helped Iowa State to a runner-up finish in the Phil Knight Invitational and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. He led the Cyclones in scoring on the week with 15.0 points per game. He scored 22 in the Cyclones’ upset of then-No. 1 North Carolina, the third time the Cyclones have beaten a No. 1-ranked team. Holmes also averaged 4.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals.
