Iowa State women's basketball player Ashley Joens

Iowa State’s Ashley Joens headlines a list of two Big 12 women’s basketball players that are on the Wade Trophy watch list for the 2022-23 season.

The list, released on Wednesday, is the first watch list for the annual award given to the nation’s top women’s basketball player, sponsored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

The other Big 12 player on the watch list is Texas guard Rori Harmon.

South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston, who won the award last season, is on the watch list again. She is joined by fellow 2021-22 All-Americans like Joens, Stanford’s Cameron Brink and Haley Jones, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley.

Joens is already Iowa State’s all-time leading scorer. In her fifth season with the program, Joens is averaging 19.9 points,, 9.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in seven games. Joens and the Cyclones are ranked No. 8 in the country and are preparing to face No. 10 Iowa next week.

Harmon has played just one game this season due to an injury, but she scored 11 points and dished out two assists in her season debut last week. The point guard was the Big 12 Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and guided Texas to the Elite Eight as a true freshman.

The Wade Watch list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list midseason to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2022-23 season.
