According to Brett McMurphy, former Texas head coach Tom Herman has been hired as the next head coach at Florida Atlantic University (FAU).
“Former Texas & Houston coach Tom Herman has been hired as FAU’s new coach, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ,” tweeted McMurphy. “Herman was 54-22 in 6 seasons – 32-18 at Texas & 22-4 at UH. Herman’s teams were perfect 5-0 in bowl games, including 2 New Year’s 6 bowls.”
During his career as a head coach, Tom Herman has amassed a record of 54-22 (22-4 at Houston, 32-18 at Texas) and has four bowl victories, including a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia after the 2018 season.
After being fired by the Longhorns, Herman served as an offensive analyst with the Chicago Bears and then recently took a job with CBS Sports as a college football analyst. Now, he will leave the business side of the sport and get back to the sideline, where I am sure he will be much more at home.
FAU is the perfect place for Herman to get his coaching career back on track, just like Lane Kiffin did with the Owls from 2017-2019. If he can find success with FAU and get them back to contending for Conference USA titles, it could land him a Power Five job somewhere.
Herman had Texas heading in the right direction, in my opinion, and was let go before he could really get things rolling the Longhorns let him go and reached for something shinier in Steve Sarkisian. Herman’s got a chance to find redemption, and a successful stint at FAU would be the first step to getting there.
