Iowa State Wins Final Game in Big 12-BIG EAST Battle


Iowa State won its game in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle on Sunday, wrapping up the series of games between the two conferences on Sunday.

Iowa State beat St. John’s, 71-60, at Hilton Coliseum to improve to 7-1 for the season.

The No. 23 Cyclones wrapped up a 2-0 week by taking an 11-point lead over St. John’s (8-1) at halftime and never looking back. The Cyclones handed the Red Storm their first loss of the season. And, the Big 12 drew a 5-5 record in its week-long series of games with the BIG EAST.


Jaren Holmes led the Cyclones with 14 points Aljaz Kunc poured in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Robert Jones came off the bench to score 11 points. Caleb Grill had just seven points but the guard also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. He also had a team-high five steals.

Posh Alexander led the Red Storm with 14 points. Montez Mathis had 13 points and Rafael Pinzon added 13 points off the bench. Joel Soriano, like Grill, only scored seven points. But he led the Red Storm with 12 rebounds.

The Cyclones head into their rivalry game with Iowa on Thursday, which will be in Iowa City. From there, the Cyclones host McNeese State, Western Michigan and Omaha before hosting Baylor to start Big 12 action on New Year’s Eve.
