Big 12 Men’s Basketball Week 5 Preview, Schedule, TV Info

The fifth week of the 2022-23 Big 12 men’s basketball season is here. Our Week 4 primer gets you ready for the week ahead in Big 12 basketball.
Below you’ll find our game of the week, our mid-major danger game of the week, notes to watch, the week’s schedule with TV information and links to other useful college basketball information during the season. Plus, keep up with the site throughout the week for our Daily Fantasy Picks with Draft Kings on those nights when there’s a Big 12 team — or teams — in the pool.
Game of the Week
Illinois vs. Texas, Tuesday. Texas heads to Madison Square Garden in New York City to face off with the Illini to see if it can protect its undefeated record and win a third game against a Top 25 team. Plenty of good storylines here, not the least of which is Texas coach Chris Beard coaching against his former Texas Tech player, Terrence Shannon Jr., who at Illinois has finally unleashed his full offensive ability.
Also: Iowa at Iowa State, Thursday. This game should be a great matchup. Iowa has already lost to one Big 12 team this season (TCU).
Mid-Major Danger Game of the Week
Sam Houston at Oklahoma State, Tuesday. Easiest one so far (and again, I apologize for picking on OSU for the third time). But all OSU coach Mike Boynton Jr. has to do is give his OU colleague Porter Moser a call to find out just how dangerous the Bearkats are. Oh, and Sam Houston beat Utah on the road, too.
Five Players to Watch
G Adam Flagler, Baylor: He made some key plays down the stretch to help Baylor overcome Gonzaga.
F Kevin McCullar, Kansas: He went to Kansas to prove he could be a better scorer. He’s starting to come around after that Seton Hall game.
F Jalen Hill, Oklahoma: The Sooners need just a little bit more from the long-time forward.
F Timmy Allen, Texas: There’s been a lot of talk about guards Marcus Carr and Tyrese Hunter. Time for Allen to flex his muscles just a little bit.
F Jaylon Tyson, Texas Tech: He looks more and more comfortable with being in Lubbock by the game. By Big 12 play he could be right where he needs to be to be a Top 10 player in the league.
Team to Watch
Oklahoma State. A week where the Cowboys need to come out perfect. Sam Houston might be the best team in the WAC. Then a road trip to Virginia Tech during exam week. Give the Cowboys credit for scheduling hard. But you have to win those games, too.
What Else to Watch?
It’s a lighter week, schedule-wise, because most players are having exams. Sometimes that can be a distraction, especially that slate of Tuesday games. If there’s going to be chaos, that’s going to be the night.
