Iowa State Still No. 1 in Big 12 Women’s Basketball Power Rankings

Iowa State women's basketball player Emily Ryan

The Iowa State Cyclones are No. 1 in the Heartland College Sports Big 12 women’s basketball power rankings entering the fifth week of action. Our Power Rankings will appear every Monday during non-conference action.

1. IOWA STATE (6-1: Last Week — 1)

Iowa State beat SIUE by 50 points last week as the Cyclones got a bit of a break after their trip to Oregon for the Phil Knight. I still think they’re playing the best basketball in the league right now. But, ISU is about to run a December gauntlet. First, the trip to Iowa City to face Iowa this week. Then, the following week they host ranked Villanova and the usually-dangerous Drake, which pushed Iowa to overtime earlier this season.

2. KANSAS (7-0: Last Week — 2)

Kansas is still undefeated and still playing some of the best basketball of any team in the conference. The separator is ranked wins, of which the Jayhawks have none. They get their chance this week at Arizona, followed by a home game with Wichita State. Time to find out what Kansas is made of.

3. KANSAS STATE (8-1: Last Week — 3)

No punishing Kansas State for playing just one game this week and taking care of business in the process. It’s a nice feather in the cap that the win comes against future Big 12 member Houston. Gabby Gregory remains above 20 points per game and at times just looks unstoppable.

4. BAYLOR (6-2: Last Week — 4)

A one-game week worked out nicely for the Bears, who beat Houston Christian with complete ease. The Bears get their shot at Arizona in the coming weeks, but for now they should pile up some happy-meal wins. Baylor still waits on Aijha Blackwell (injury) and Dre’una Edwards (eligibility). I’m not sure we know just how good Baylor is yet.

5. OKLAHOMA (7-1: Last Week — 5)

The Sooners won two games this past week so they hold steady. The play of Skylar Vann was key to keeping the Sooners in this spot.

6. OKLAHOMA STATE (7-2: Last Week — 7)

The Cowgirls keep piling up wins and putting together solid games under new coach Jacie Hoyt. For now, they’re deserving of this spot. But once Big 12 play begins we’ll learn a lot more about this team.

7. TEXAS TECH (7-1: Last Week — 8)

Two wins last week for Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders have won six straight games and, frankly, I don’t see any reason they can’t win the next five before Big 12 play begins against Iowa State.

8. WEST VIRGINIA (6-1: Last Week — 9)

West Virginia’s new offensive system seems to really agree with holdover guard Madisen Smith, who might be one of the best players we’re not talking about right now. There’s a big weekend game coming up with Penn State, and opportunity for WVU to flex its muscles against a Big Ten team.

9. TEXAS (4-4: Last Week — 6)

South Florida is an NCAA Tournament team. But this is the fourth loss of the season for Texas and I can’t justify keeping them among the Top 6. I’m fully confident the Longhorns will get back there. But, for now, Texas has some issues to work out. They have two more tune-ups against SWAC schools before facing USC.

10. TCU (3-4: Last Week — 10)

The Horned Frogs remain under .500. TCU hopes it can get back above .500 by the start of Big 12 play. I wouldn’t take any of the next four games for granted if I was TCU.
