DeYona Gaston is Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of The Week

NABC National Championship Trophy

Texas forward DeYona Gaston is the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the fifth week of the 2022-23 season.

Baylor forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the first time this season. She earlier claimed the award for the first week of the season.

Gaston had career-highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds, plus shot 50 percent from the field in the Longhorns’ 107-54 win over Alabama State last week. She is the first Big 12 player to have at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in a game this season, and the first Texas player to do it since Charli Collier in 2020-21.

It is Gaston’s first career Player of the Week honor. She earned one Freshman of the Week honor previously.

Littlepage-Buggs had 11 points and 10 rebounds and made 50 percent of her field goals as the Bears defeated UT Arlington, 91-36. Littlepage-Buggs, who leads D-I freshmen with 9.1 rebounds per game, posted her third double-double of the season.

It is the third time a Baylor player has been honored with Freshman of the Week this season, but the first honor for Littlepage-Buggs. Bella Fontleroy grabbed the other two, including last week’s honor.
