West Virginia forward Tre Mitchell is the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the fifth week of the 2022-23 season.
Grant Sherfield, the Oklahoma guard, is the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
This is Mitchell’s first weekly honor this season, but the second of his career. He won one at Texas last season. Sherfield won the newcomer award for the first time this season.
Mitchell averaged 16 points, 6.5 rebounds and four assists in two games last week, both Mountaineers victories. He second 19 points and six rebounds in the win over Navy and 13 points and seven rebounds in the win over UAB.
The senior forward shot 59.1 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from 3-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line. He left Texas in the middle of last season and eventually transferred to West Virginia. She spent two seasons at UMass before going to Texas.
Sherfield averaged 23.5 points, three rebounds, 2.5 steals and two assists for Oklahoma last week. He led the Sooners in scoring against both Kansas City (24) and nationally-ranked Arkansas (23) as he has recorded 20-plus points in three consecutive games. Sherfield shot 58.3 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the 3-point line. His 54.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line is best in the Big 12 Conference.
