Will Howard to Start at QB in Sugar Bowl vs. Alabama

With Adrian Martinez getting healthy again, there were questions among the Kansas State fanbase about who would start at quarterback for the Wildcats in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

When Martinez went down, junior quarterback Will Howard took over and has been terrific in his stead. On the year, Howard has thrown for 1,423 yards, 15 touchdowns, and just two interceptions while completing 61.6% of his passes. He’s also added three running scores and had taken command of the offense, which has elevated it to the next level.

With Howard clicking on all cylinders, K-State head coach Chris Klieman doesn’t want to mess with any of the mojo that his team has built after taking down TCU to win the Big 12 Championship and earn the conference’s Sugar Bowl bid to face No. 5 Alabama.

Kellis Robinett of the Wichita Eagle shared this note from Klieman’s media availability on Monday, squashing any thoughts that Martinez might get the nod next week.

Howard’s command of the offense was pivotal for the Wildcats season, as he was a perfect 4-0 in starts this season and was wonderful when filling in for Martinez against TCU and Oklahoma State. If there was any doubt about who the quarterback of the future is in Manhattan, look no further than No. 18.

K-State and Alabama will kickoff the 2022 Allstate Sugar Bowl at 11:00 a.m. CT on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans, with the Crimson Tide currently favored by 6.0 points.
