Zakiyah Franklin is Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of Week

Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament Trophy.

Kansas guard Zakiyah Franklin is the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the sixth week of the 2022-23 season.

Redshirt freshman Denae Fritz is the Big 12 Freshman of the Week. It’s the first weekly honor for both players.

Franklin put together a career effort in Kansas’ last win over Tulsa, one that helped propel the Jayhawks to a 10-0 start and a No. 20 national ranking.

Franklin scored 26 points in the Jayhawks’ 81-62 win over Tulsa. Her 26 points matched a career-high. She added five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

She is the first Kansas player to win Player of the Week honors since November of 2019.

Fritz missed most of last season with an injury and took the redshirt. She emerged as a starter on an experienced Cyclones team coming off a trip to the Sweet 16 last season.

She made all three of her 3-pointers and scored 13 points in No. 14 Iowa State’s 74-62 win over then-No. 25 Villanova on Sunday. Her 13 points were a career-best. She is the third different Iowa State player to earn a weekly award this season, alongside Ashley Joens and Stephanie Soares.
