Kansas DE Lonnie Phelps Declares for 2023 NFL Draft

NCAA Football: Texas at Kansas

Kansas defensive end Lonnie Phelps has declared for the 2023 NFL Draft after a breakout season for the Jayhawks in 2022.

In his lone season in Lawrence, Phelps led the team in sacks (7), tackles for loss (11.5), and QB hurries (6), and was unquestionably the best defensive player in KU’s arsenal.

Lance Leipold and company were hoping to bring back the Miami (OH) transfer for at least one more season, but the junior felt that it was time to take his talents to the next level.

“I would like to thank God, for where I gain my strength to pursue my dreams,” Phelps wrote. “I want to use this message to thank my parents, family and friends. Without my teammates and coaches from Miami University at Ohio and University of Kansas, I would not have the cherished memories of our time together. My dream is to play football on Sundays and I am now in position to do so. I am excited to declare for 2023 NFL Draft.”

With Phelps gone, Kansas is loading back up in the transfer portal along the defensive line with Devin Phillips heading to Lawrence from Colorado State and both Austin Booker and Gage Keys coming in from Minnesota. Kansas also expects to get back Jereme Robinson for another year after three sacks and two forced fumbles in 2022.
