Sonny Dykes ‘Optimistic’ Running Back Kendre Miller Will Play vs. Georgia

One of the biggest question marks for TCU ahead of the National Championship Game against Georgia is the status of running back Kendre Miller.

Miller suffered a knee injury in the first half against Michigan in the College Football Playoff semifinal and barely played in the second half. Earlier this week, Sonny Dykes called Kendre Miller “questionable”, but during media availability on Saturday, Dykes had some positive news on his starting running back.

Dykes said, “I think to me in the next 24 hours is when obviously we’ll have to make a determination, have a pretty good idea on what he’s going to be able to do going into the game Monday. We’re still optimistic that he’s going to be able to play. So we’ll see how he feels today.”

Getting Miller back would be huge for TCU, as he has been responsible for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground this season, while averaging 6.2 yards per carry. His total rushing yards trailed only Bijan Robinson and Deuce Vaughn (both of whom have declared for the NFL Draft) in the Big 12.

Dykes went on to explain what the last 24 hours have been like for Miller, saying, “It’s one of those deals we want to give him some time to rest and recover, see where he was at. Did a bunch of work, probably a little bit more than we thought he was going to be able to do. Woke up yesterday a little sore. I think he feels better today.”

Miller’s back up, Emari Demercado had himself a great game in relief for the starter. Demercado rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown against Michigan, including a 69-yard run that helped set up a Max Duggan touchdown run that gave TCU a 41-22 lead in the third quarter.

Dykes wrapped up his comments on Miller saying, “We just don’t want to put him out there and give him an opportunity to get more injured.”

TCU is currently seen by oddsmakers as a nearly two-touchdown underdog to Georgia on Monday, with the line set at 13.5 points with just under a week until the game. If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out our preview of the game.
