Oklahoma Lands Commitment From Michigan WR Andrel Anthony

NCAA Football: Big 12 Championship-Baylor vs Oklahoma

Oklahoma landed a big commitment on Tuesday as former Michigan wide receiver Andrel Anthony announced that he will transfer to play for the Sooners in 2023.

Anthony, a former three-star wideout out of East Lansing, Michigan, was expected to have a monster season in 2022 after 12 receptions for 248 yards and three touchdowns in 2021, including a 93-yard score against Georgia in last season’s College Football Playoff semifinal.

Instead, Anthony had just seven receptions, 80 yards, and one score in 2022 and decided to enter the transfer portal after the season and now he is headed to Norman.

Anthony, listed at 6-2, 190 pounds, is just a sophomore and has at least two years of eligibility remaining.

Oklahoma absolutely needed this commitment as they are set to lose four of their top six pass catchers from 2022, including Marvin Mims. Mims totaled 54 receptions for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 20.1 yards per catch (third nationally) in 2022, and declared for the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Sooners’ top returning pass catcher is Jalil Farooq, who had 37 receptions for 466 yards and five touchdowns in 2022, so there is plenty of opportunity for Anthony to come in and be a contributor right away.

Oklahoma will reportedly be bringing on a new wide receiver coach in Texas Tech’s Emmett Jones, and he needs to bolster his position group quickly. Adding Anthony, who had offers from Miami, Texas A&M, Penn State, Notre Dame, and UCLA among others, is a really good start.
