Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders received some good news on Thursday evening as 2024 four-star running back Johann Cardenas pledged to don the scarlet and black at the next level.
Cardenas, listed at 6-1, 217 pounds, is a junior at St. Thomas High School in Houston (TX) and is coming off a season where he turned 108 carries into 1,041 yards (9.63 ypc) and 13 touchdowns while adding 20 receptions for 330 yards and five scores.
He is currently ranked as the No. 24 RB and No. 283 overall player in the class of 2024, according to 247Sports’ composite rating.
Texas Tech’s newest commitment chose to head to Lubbock over an offer list that included Colorado, SMU, UTSA, and Colorado State and is the crown jewel for what is now the nation’s No. 6 recruiting class in 2024.
“I just love the atmosphere over at Tech overall,” Cardenas told 247Sports. “I’ve never been much of a city person either and that’s just another plus with being able to go to school in Lubbock. The biggest thing though is what Coach McGuire and the rest of the staff at Tech is building. They’ve already picked up so many 24s and it’s only January of our junior years/ Also what he’s done in one year alone is just incredible and it’s only the beginning.”
Texas Tech is coming off an 8-5 season, their best finish since 2013, and defeated both Oklahoma and Texas for the first time in the same season in school history. The Red Raiders have all kinds of momentum thanks to Joey McGuire and it appears that will help them roll into the 2024 recruiting class with some excitement as well.
