Jaylan Ford Announces Return to Texas For 2023 Season

NCAA Football: Texas at Texas Tech

Texas linebacker Jaylan Ford announced on Saturday that he would be returning for another season with the Longhorns.

That’s a big shot in the arm for Texas, as Ford was their leading tackler in 2022.

Ford made the announcement via social media.

“To my Longhorn family, I want you all to know that I strive every day to represent everything this school is about, both on and off the field,” Ford wrote in the post. “And I feel that there is still a lot I have yet to accomplish as a player and a student.”

“I will continue to build my legacy and help this team create something special and return for my senior season.”

Texas needed Ford to return due to the sheer number of players that have declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, led by linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

Four other defenders are headed there, including defensive back D’Shawn Jamison, who was Texas’ top return man. Texas also lost linebacker Ovie Oghoufo to the transfer portal and he just announced he would head for LSU.

All of that magnifies the important of Ford’s return.

Ford has a terrific season in 2022, finishing with 119 tackles (10 for loss) along with two sacks and two fumble recoveries. He even led Texas with four interceptions.

Texas is coming off an 8-5 season under second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. The Longhorns finished in third place in the Big 12 and ended up going to the Alamo Bowl, where it lost to Washington, 27-20. Along with replacing several starters on defense, the Longhorns will also need to replace running back Bijan Robinson, who is also headed for the 2023 NFL Draft.
