The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are on the search for their next head basketball coach. Many names have been suggested across NBA and college basketball landscape to replace Mike Brey.
ND Insider created a list that features several potentially head coaching candidates, with a list that includes includes John Beilein of the Detroit Pistons, Mark Byington, head coach at James Madison, Darian DeVries, head coach for the Drake Bulldogs, and even Iona head coach Rick Pitino.
One name that’s been popping up in conversation for head coaching vacancies is Oklahoma assistant coach, Ryan Humphrey.
ND Insider notes about Humphrey, “Humphrey fits the profile of how Swarbrick has previously hired in football (Marcus Freeman) and women’s basketball (Niele Ivey) — a black coach with no previous head coaching experience who just fits.
Humphrey fits. He definitely would have the personality for the position. He left Notre Dame last summer for Oklahoma, in part to get a different perspective of coaching in college basketball. He’s a future head coach somewhere. Is it at his alma mater?”
Humphrey is in his first season as an assistant with the Sooners. He started his collegiate playing career with OU in the 1997-98 season and was a McDonald’s All-American at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa per the University’s website.
Humphrey spent six years as an assistant coach for Brey at Notre Dame before leaving for Oklahoma. If Notre Dame could bring Humphrey in as HC, the connection to the university would be a great opportunity for a great fit.
