The 12th week of the 2022-23 Big 12 women’s basketball season is here. Our Week 12 primer gets you ready for the week ahead in Big 12 basketball.
This is the third full week of Big 12 action, with games on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Below you’ll find our top three games of the week, our sneaky good game of the week, notes to watch, the week’s schedule with TV information and links to other useful college basketball information during the season.
Top Three Games of the Week
Oklahoma at Iowa State, Saturday. The last time they played the Sooners won, but barely, after Iowa State’s Stephanie Soares tore her ACL. Have the Cyclones recalibrated enough to earn a split?
Kansas State at Kansas, Sunday. It’s the Sunflower State Showdown, women’s style. And the Wildcats are a little desperate after a slow start in Big 12 play. Frankly, so is Kansas (1-4 in last five games).
Sneaky Good Game of the Week
Five Players to Watch
F Ashley Joens, Iowa State: She dropped 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against Kansas. Yes, guards Emily Ryan and Lexi Donarski have to take on more of the scoring load. But this is the Joens the Cyclones need every night from here on out.
F Taiyanna Jackson, Kansas: Speaking of players a team needs every night, Jackson has three double-doubles in her last five games. But it hasn’t helped KU, which has lost four of its last five.
F Gabby Gregory, Kansas State: K-State needed that win over TCU, and it needed Gregory to produce. She scored 21 and is averaging close to 20 per game.
G Tomi Taiwo, TCU: She’s the most consistent player on a team that hasn’t won a Big 12 game yet. She’s averaging 14.8 points per game.
G Rori Harmon, Texas: What else is there to say? As Harmon goes, so goes Texas. And not everything that she does shows up on the stat sheet, either.
Team to Watch
Oklahoma State: The Cowgirls have a spot in NCAA Bracketology and that probably won’t change this week after an 0-2 week that saw them lose to Iowa State and Oklahoma (the latter a brilliantly-played game by both teams). But, with a little success comes a little more pressure. The Cowgirls have a game they need to win this week against Kansas State at home. And then they head to Texas on Saturday in a re-match of the game they won in Stillwater. A sweep would be amazing, of course. But the Cowgirls are now in position where they have games they SHOULD win. And that’s the K-State game on Wednesday. Watch that one carefully to see if there’s a hangover from the Bedlam loss.
Oklahoma guard Taylor Robertson is the Big 12 and Oklahoma career 3-Point record holder as she entered the season with 446 3-pointers. In her last season in Norman, she has the chance to leave as the all-time NCAA leader in made 3-pointers, male or female. In each primer, we’ll track her progress.
Taylor Robertson: 495 (through 18 games)
Women’s leader: Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), 497
Needed to pass Mitchell: 3
Men’s leader: Fletcher McGee (Wofford), 509
Needed to pass McGee: 15
