Oklahoma Football Lands In-State Safety Cale Fugate

The Oklahoma Sooners have lots of improvement to make on the defensive side of the ball and there has been an emphasis on adding proven playmakers there this offseason.

Brent Venables and staff earned a pledge from a guy that fits that description on Monday as Bixby (OK) safety Cale Fugate has announced he will accept a preferred walk-on (PWO) offer to the University of Oklahoma.

Fugate, a senior for the 6AI state champion Bixby Spartans, was voted as the defensive player of the year in his district by coaches.

At 5-11, 185 pounds, Fugate may not have the measurables of some of the top athletes in the nation, but his film shows that the kid can play ball. In his senior season, Fugate recorded 66 tackles and five interceptions for the Spartans, while also adding 36 receptions for 680 yards and 12 touchdowns as a receiver.

Fugate chose to accept the PWO offer from Oklahoma over a scholarship offer from Air Force (according to On3) and will be part of a deep secondary class for the Sooners.

The newest member of Oklahoma’s 2023 class, Fugate joins the nation’s No. 4 recruiting class which is chock-full of promise on both sides of the ball.

Earning time on the field will prove difficult for anyone in this class with the amount of talent coming in, but Fugate is not a guy to be overlooked as the Sooners search for playmakers of the future.
