Oklahoma LB David Ugwoegbu Transfers to Houston

NCAA Football: Oklahoma State at Oklahoma

One of Oklahoma’s top defenders, David Ugwoegbu, from 2022 will remain in the Big 12 in 2023 as the former linebacker is headed to Houston.

That’s right, the Sooners’ second-leading tackler in 2022 as a linebacker is not only changing jerseys but also positions, as he will now be a defensive end for the Houston Cougars.

Mark Berman, the sports director at FOX 26 in Houston, was the first to report that Ugwoegbu will transfer to Houston and make the subsequent position change when he gets there.

“I decided to play ball at the University of Houston for my last year,” Ugwoegbu told FOX 26. “I’m gonna be making a position change to defensive end. I just feel like this is the best opportunity for me to prove myself and show what I can really do. I’ll be coming as a grad transfer. So I’ll be one and done here.”

After appearing in 50 games for the Sooners, Ugwoegbu will leave a relatively large void to fill at linebacker, but the position might be better for it. Some feel that Oklahoma’s ceiling might be a bit higher at linebacker with young pieces like Jaren Kanak now having a clear path to play.

In 2022, Ugwoegbu played almost 90% of defensive snaps and was second only to Danny Stutsman on the team in tackles with 109 on the year. At 6-4, 237 pounds, Ugwoegbu has the measurables to play at the next level but will need to show his versatility in a position change going into his last season.

Not only will Kanak benefit from Ugwoegbu’s departure, but transfer Dasan McCullough and redshirt freshmen Kobie McKenzie and Kip Lewis will also have opportunities to make strides at linebacker too.
