Kevin McCullar Not in KU Starting Line Up for Big 12 Tournament Opener

One day after Kevin McCullar missed some practice time due to back spasms, the Kansas guard is not in the starting line up for Kansas’ Big 12 Tournament opener against West Virginia.

McCullar did not seem concerned about his back spasms when talking with the media on Wednesday at T-Mobile Center, saying, “I’m fine, I was out there at shootaround, getting ready. I practiced earlier. (I’m) just getting ready for tomorrow.”

It remains to be seen if McCullar will in fact play when Kansas takes on WVU for a 2:00 p.m. CST tip off in Kansas City at the T-Mobile Center. Junior guard Joseph Yesufu was listed as the starter.

This comes on top of what has already been a bad day of news for Kansas, as head coach Bill Self is going to miss at least the Tournament opener against West Virginia due to an undisclosed illness.

McCullar transferred in from Texas Tech in the offseason and earned a second-team AP All-Big 12 selection. McCullar set career highs across the board this season, averaging 11.1 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game and shooting over 43% from the floor.

Kansas is hoping a strong Big 12 Tournament will land them the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in the Midwest Region, which would give them an incredible home court advantage since the Regional is in Kansas City, 30 miles down the road from Lawrence and the same location as the Big 12 Tournament.

Kansas is coming off a 75-59 loss to Texas on Saturday, but KU came into the game having already won the Big 12 regular season title.
