Sunday Six-Pack: Five Big 12 Teams Complete Sweeps

Kansas State Baseball

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#10 TCU vs San Diego

This turned into a pitching battle right away between the two teams. The Toreros took a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning before TCU’s bats woke up. Thanks to home runs by Brayden Taylor and Austin Davis, the Horned Frogs found themselves up 3-2 after the sixth inning. Kurtis Bryne added more insurance runs in the next inning when he hit a big two-run blast to extend TCU’s lead. However, San Diego would not go down without a fight. Shortstop Justin Decriscio knocked in a pair of runs in the ninth inning to pull San Diego within a run. They had the tying run on second base with two outs but TCU closer Louis Rodriguez closed the game out as TCU took the third game and the series on Sunday.

Best Win

Oklahoma over Houston

I could have gone with West Virginia, but I think the Sooners were a little more impressive due to the fact that their opponent was a little better. Oklahoma also had to play on the road which is tougher as well. Believe it or not, Houston had 2-1 lead going into the sixth inning and then Oklahoma caught fire at the plate. Anthony Mackenzie, Dakota Harris, and Jackson Nicklaus all drove in runs in the sixth inning to give the Sooners a 4-2 lead. An error and a sac-fly put two more runs on the board for Oklahoma before Easton Carmichael knocked in another. Yet despite being up by five runs, Houston got right back in the game as they scored four runs in the eighth inning to make things interesting. But it was Oklahoma who still ended up coming out on top to complete the sweep over the Cougars on the road.

Worst Loss

Baylor

I feel like at least twice a weekend, the Bears earn the award for the worst loss. Baylor lost yet again on Sunday as they were swept by Mercer over the weekend. The Bears were outscored 24 to 9 during their three-game series.

Sunday MVP

Texas DH Porter Brown

Porter has been a guy on my radar this season and he had a great game on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. Brown hit a pair of doubles to drive three runs in and also brought in another with a groundout in the fourth inning. He played a big role in this game as Texas completed the sweep over Manhattan.

Pitcher of the Day

Oklahoma State RHP Isaac Stebens

Isaac took over for Brennan Phillips in the fourth inning of Oklahoma State’s game against Utah Tech. Stebens ended up pitching the rest of the game as he went six full inning and didn’t allow a single run. He was also able to strike out six batters during his time on the mound and only allowed two hits. It was quite a performance from Isaac which is why he earns the pitcher of the day award.

Best Home Run

TCU OF Austin Davis

Davis was the man who helped TCU take the lead in the sixth inning against San Diego after his big solo home run.
