Oklahoma State Beats Eastern Washington in NIT Second Round

Syndication: The Oklahoman

The Oklahoma State Cowboys beat the Eastern Washington Eagles, 71-60, in the second round of the men’s Postseason NIT on Sunday.

Oklahoma State will play either North Texas or Sam Houston on either Tuesday or Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

This is the second time that coach Mike Boynton Jr. has taken the Cowboys to the NIT quarterfinals. He led them to the same round in his first season as head coach in 2017-18.

Bryce Thompson had a huge game for the Cowboys, as he scored 22 points and made six 3-pointers.

The Cowboys (20-15) won their first NIT game on the road against Youngstown State, 69-64, even though they were the No. 1 seed in their part of the bracket and were entitled to host the game. But OSU’s support staff for Gallagher-Iba Arena was already working the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, as OSU was the host school.

So Sunday’s game was OSU’s first NIT home game of the tournament.

The Cowboys started the game by taking a 39-30 lead at halftime and never gave it up. They held Eastern Washington (23-11) to 38.6 percent shooting overall and 29 percent shooting from the 3-point line.

OSU shot 48 percent from the floor and  45 percent from the 3-point line. They needed the boost because the Cowboys were minus-5 in turnovers after committing 18 to EWU’s 13.

John-Michael Wright and Tyreek Smith each had 11 points for the Cowboys. Smith ended up with a double-double with 10 rebounds.
