Iowa State Softball Shatters Attendance Record Vs. Oklahoma

Iowa State Athletics

They say if you build it, they will come, and that certainly was the case in Ames, Iowa for a little Big 12 softball Saturday afternoon. Of course, the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners were in town, and they’ve certainly built something special, which Iowa State Cyclones nation took in, in all its glory to the tune of a record-setting crowd of 1,715.

Beforehand, fans were seen waiting in line, a sight you might not see every day at the Cyclone Sports Complex. But it definitely was on this 50-degree day in the state of Iowa.

Unfortunately, for the Iowa State fans in attendance, it was not exactly what they were hoping for in the first contest. It was for the Oklahoma fans, however, who witnessed their team claim a 13-3 victory in five innings.

The Sooners were powered by the long ball, as six different players homered in the opener. That included blasts by Alyssa Brito, Haley Lee, Grace Lyons, Tiare Jennings, Jocelyn Erickson and Sophia Nugent.

The Cyclones did manage a few tallies of their own, though. In fact, they actually took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That’s when Milaysia Ochoa delivered with an RBI double to right center and an uncharacteristic error by the nation’s best team allowed another run to score.

The two are completing their series with the latter half of a doubleheader, as Oklahoma has now taken the first two for a best-of-three win. Game two began with the Sooners jumping out in front early this time, by an 8-0 count in the first.
