Texas Men’s Basketball to Play in 2023 ‘Empire Classic’ at Madison Square Garden

Texas interim basketball coach Rodney Terry.

While the Longhorns season ended in the Elite Eight of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, fans will get to see a matchup between Rodney Terry’s Texas Longhorns and the defending national champion UConn Huskies.

Both teams have been invited alongside Indiana and Louisville to take part in the Empire Classic, a tournament in New York City before the season starts on November 19th and 20th at Madison Square Garden.

The Empire Classic features three NCAA Tournament teams from the 2022-2023 season while adding in the historic Louisville Cardinals. The UConn Huskies are fresh off of an NCAA title and have a chunk of players returning.

The Texas Longhorns are likely to lose two or three players to the NBA Draft/Graduation, however, the core of the Longhorns should be back under Rodney Terry. The Indiana Hoosiers had a special season even if they didn’t light it up in March. The Hoosiers lost to the Miami Hurricanes in the Round of 32 but after a season that included some major profile wins like Purdue, expect the Hoosiers to be fine.

The last team of the four is the Louisville Cardinals and while they did miss out on the NCAA Tournament in the 2023 season, the team’s history speaks for itself in terms of a bounce-back season.

The Empire Classic tips off on November 19th at Madison Square Garden where fans will get an up-close look at some of the nation’s best teams.
