It was an inevitability, but now it’s official. Oklahoma guard Grant Sherfield is on the way out and headed to the 2023 NBA Draft, as he announced the news on his Instagram Wednesday.

“I want to thank God for the amazing opportunities he has afforded me through this beautiful game of basketball,” Sherfield started in a statement. “A special thanks to my family and friends for their unconditional love throughout my journey! To the OU staff, Norman community and Sooner Nation, thank you for the warm embrace and support. I’m proud to say, I’m a Sooner for life!

“To my brothers/teammates, we didn’t fulfill our season goals, but we played hard and left everything on the court! There is growth and love in our shared journey.

“After discussions with my family and coaches, I have decided to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft.”

In his lone season with the Sooners, Sherfield averaged 15.9 points, 3.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. That included 11 20-plus-point contests, as he started each of Oklahoma’s 32 games during the 2022-23 campaign.

Sherfield led the Sooners in a number of statistical categories, including the aforementioned points per game, free throws made (88), free throws attempted (102), assists (104), assists per game (3.3), 3-pointers made (82), 3-pointers attempted (208), minutes played (1078:55) and minutes per game (33.7). With that, he was tabbed an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention recipient.

He’s the latest of a number of Sooners to leave the program. That includes guards Joe Bamisile, Bijan Cortes, CJ Noland and Benny Schroder, and most recently forward Jalen Hill, who have all entered the transfer portal.

Oklahoma finished the just concluded season at 15-17. That featured a 5-13 mark in Big 12 play.
