Kliff Kingsbury to Join Lincoln Riley’s Staff at USC: Report

Kliff Kingsbury is linking up with someone else with ties to No. 1 overall draft picks and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He’s joining fellow Red Raider alum Lincoln Riley’s staff at USC as a quarterbacks coach, according to a report by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

“Kingsbury, who was part of the team that drafted Kyler Murray at No. 1 overall, now will coach another potential No. 1 pick in Caleb Williams,” Pelissero points out.

This becomes a bit of a full circle moment for Kingsbury, who briefly joined USC as offensive coordinator after getting fired as head coach at Texas Tech back in 2018. But after spending just a matter of weeks in Southern California, the Arizona Cardinals hired him as their head coach.

Kingsbury spent four seasons coaching the Cardinals, but was unable to expand upon one playoff berth in the 2021 season. His squad, which narrowly missed out on the playoffs back in 2020, stumbled to a 4-13 record in this most recent 2022 campaign.

Before all that, Kingsbury compiled a 35-40 record at his alma mater. His best season in Lubbock was a 7-6 finish in 2015.

As mentioned, Kingsbury inherited former Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray. Riley, of course, coached Murray during his Heisman run back during the 2018 season.

So, the connection makes a whole lot of sense on a number of levels. And we’ll all see in the coming days just how well the two mesh in the sunny city of Los Angeles.
