Mel Kiper’s Latest Mock Draft Predicts Chiefs to Select Iowa State’s Will McDonald

The 2023 NFL Draft is just a couple of weekends out, which means that we are in the heart of mock draft season.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has been covering NFL Drafts since 1984, and his mock drafts garner as much attention as anyone else in the business.

On Tuesday morning, Kiper published the fourth rendition of his 2023 Mock Draft, and projects nine Big 12 players to go in the first two rounds of the draft.

At No. 11, Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson comes off the board to Arizona, becoming the highest-drafted Red Raider since Patrick Mahomes was taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 Draft.

The next Big 12 player to come off the board in Kiper’s Mock Draft is Texas running back Bijan Robinson at No. 18 to the Detroit Lions. As a first-round selection at running back, Robinson is being viewed as a generational talent at the position and just can’t fall to the second round.

Then, with the final pick of the first round, the Kansas City Chiefs are projected to select Iowa State’s Will McDonald IV, which might be the most intriguing landing spot for any Big 12 player.

Kansas City is a perfect fit for McDonald, and isn’t too far from where he’s called home for the last several years. Here’s what Kiper had to say about the 31st pick.

“The McDonald stat I love most? He had 10 career forced fumbles. He gets to quarterbacks but also understands how to create turnovers. ( Will Anderson Jr. had just one forced fumble in his career at Alabama.) McDonald is an explosive player with a high ceiling. The Super Bowl champs could add him to the edge rotation with George Karlaftis and free agent addition Charles Omenihu. As I’ve mentioned before, keep Kansas City in mind for the wideouts in this class.”

McDonald’s selection starts a four-pick run of Big 12 players with Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison (No. 32, Pittsburgh), Kansas State Felix Anudike-Uzomah (No. 33, Houston), and TCU’s Quentin Johnston (No. 34, Arizona) all going in succession.

Kansas State’s Julius Brents is projected to land with Pittsburgh with the 49th pick, with TCU’s Steve Avila landing with the Dolphins just two picks later at No. 51. Then, to close out the second round, Kansas City comes back to the Big 12 once more for a playmaker, taking Oklahoma’s Marvin Mims with the 63rd overall pick.

Here’s a quick rundown of the Big 12 selections in Kiper’s latest Mock Draft.
