Oklahoma Softball Leads Nation in All Three Major Statistical Categories

Oklahoma softball is on a tear once again in 2023, and is viewed as the far-and-away favorite to win its third-consecutive national championship this summer.

The Sooners are 37-1 and winners of 29-straight games, the longest active streak in the nation. OU has the weekend off from Big 12 play and will head to Oxford, Ohio for the Miami (OH) Tournament. There, Oklahoma will play Oakland, Louisville, and Miami (OH), hoping to extend its winning streak to 32 games.

While it won’t be a focus for Patty Gasso or her squad, the Sooners can also do something else while playing a weekend full of nonconference games: it can widen the gap in the statistical categories that it leads nationally.

As crazy as it sounds, the Sooners lead the nation in a total of nine statistical categories, including all three major stats of batting average, ERA, and fielding percentage.

Take a look at each of the categories that Oklahoma currently sets the bar for nationally.

  • Batting Average (.373)
  • Earned Run Average (0.88)
  • Fielding Percentage (.988)
  • Slugging Percentage (.680)
  • On-Base Percentage (.461)
  • Runs Per Game (8.39)
  • Doubles Per Game (1.97)
  • Shutouts (23)
  • W/L Percentage (.974)

That’s impressive, especially when you consider that the NCAA only tracks 16 team statistical categories. While they have always been elite under Patty Gasso, the Sooners have taken things to another level over the past decade, winning five of the last nine national titles, and four of the last six.
