Friday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: West Virginia Takes Game One While Texas Tech Wins in Extras

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Arkansas vs Texas Tech

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Friday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#21 Texas Tech at Oklahoma

This was by far the best game on Friday, and it wasn’t even close. The Red Raiders got the scoring started early as Gage Harrelson drove the first run across before Gavin Kash hit a solo blast in the second inning.

Oklahoma quickly responded in the second inning and then went on to score three runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Gavin Kash would add another run in the sixth inning and then his team would take the lead in the seventh as Gage Harrelson and Kevin Bazzell brought a pair of runs in.

But once again, the Sooners would answer as Jackson Nicklaus tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with his big hit.

From there the game went into extras and that is where Texas Tech took over. Gavin Kash ended his big night with a grand slam as the Red Raiders went on to win game one 13 to 7.

Best Win

West Virginia over #18 Oklahoma State

It was important for West Virginia to get off to a strong start this weekend and they did just that by taking game one of their series against Oklahoma State in Stillwater. JJ Wetherholt started the game off right with a home run as the Mountaineers scored three runs in the first two innings.

West Virginia would add a few more runs throughout the game thanks to Dayne Leonard and Caleb McNeely added an insurance run in the ninth inning. I was extremely impressed with the way they were able to get hits against Juaron Watts-Brown who has been Oklahoma State’s ace this season. Now the Mountaineers just need to win one of their next two games to take the series.

Worst Loss

UNC Wilmington over #25 TCU

This game was an absolute disaster for TCU. Ryan Vanderhei got the start on the mound and ran into trouble early and then had to be pulled in the fifth inning as he gave up five earned runs. Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse because the Horned Frogs gave up seven runs in the eighth inning as they were blown out. TCU needs to have a big bounce back game on Saturday and then win again on Sunday to avoid dropping this series.

Friday MVP

Texas Tech 1B Gavin Kash

Gavin had a monster Friday night as he homered in the second inning and then hit a grand slam in extras to help his team pull away. He would end his magical night with a whopping six RBIs.

Pitcher of the Day

Texas LHP Lucas Gordon

Lucas has won this award multiple times since the season started because he has had some outstanding performances. Against Baylor, he pitched six full innings and didn’t allow a single run. Anytime this man is on the mound, Texas wins.

Best Home Run

Texas Tech 1B Gavin Kash

A grand slam in extra innings? Yes please.
