Baylor Bears

Saturday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: Three Teams Clinch Series

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

#19 Texas at Baylor

If you like high scoring games, then this was the one for you. The Longhorns were all over the Bears early as they scored four runs in the first inning. Peyton Powell, Garret Guillemette, Jared Thomas, and Jack O’Dowd all drove in runs to give Texas a 4-0 lead. But the Bears answered right back because they scored five runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. A wild pitch and a walk helped the Bears get on the board before Harrison Caley and Caleb Bergman brought in a few runs as Baylor took a 5-4 lead.

The Longhorns would eventually tie the game in the third before taking the lead in the sixth when Peyton Powell and Porter Brown got a pair of key hits. Garret Guillemette added an insurance run in the eighth inning but that didn’t matter because Baylor made a ninth inning comeback to remember. Two Baylor players were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored a pair of runs and then Caleb Bergman knocked in his second RBI of the game. The hero in this one ended up being Hunter Teplanszky who hit the game winner on his walk off two RBI single. With the win, Baylor ties the series, and they will face Texas on Sunday in a winner take all.

Best Win

West Virginia over #18 Oklahoma State

How about these Mountaineers? After dropping a series against Kansas last weekend, they go on the road and take a series against a top 25 Oklahoma State team. West Virginia was down by a pair of runs going into the fifth inning and finally took the lead when Caleb McNeely drove in a run.

Oklahoma State would end up tying the game back up in the seventh, but an error put West Virginia back on top before Landon Wallace hit a three-run bomb to secure the victory and the series.

Worst Loss

Before the season started, I wasn’t expecting much from this team. Yet they have won a pair of series going into this weekend. After taking down a top 25 West Virginia team on the road last weekend, they fell flat on Saturday losing 6-1 to Kansas State. The Jayhawks had just four hits in this game and lost the series in the first two games.

Saturday MVP

Baylor 3B Hunter Teplanszky

Hunter’s hit in the ninth inning brought in two runs that won the game for Baylor on Saturday afternoon. Without that hit, the Bears would have likely dropped the series against Texas. Instead, they ended up with a win and will play a rubber match on Sunday.

Pitcher of the Day

Texas Tech RHP Ryan Free

Ryan came into the game in the fifth inning against Oklahoma and didn’t allow a single hit in five innings of work. The Sooners stood no chance against him as he struck out nine batters on the day.

Best Home Run

West Virginia LF Landon Wallace

Landon’s performance was epic as he drove in four runs on Saturday night. He started off with an RBI single early in the game before hitting a three-run bomb in the eighth inning.
