Big 12 Baseball Sunday Six-Pack: Texas Takes Series From Baylor While TCU Collapses

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Kansas State at Kansas

The best Big 12 baseball game on Saturday took place in the Sunflower state as Kansas State took on Kansas in Lawrence. This is one of the highest scoring Big 12 games I can remember, and the fireworks started early as Kansas State put up 13 runs in the second inning.

The Wildcats hit three home runs in their magical second inning as Roberto Pena, Kalen Culpepper, and Kyan Lodice all went deep.

But Kansas didn’t go away because they were able to score seven runs of their own in the next inning which was highlighted by a Chase Jans grand slam.

Both teams traded a few runs in the fourth inning and Kansas eventually pulled back within five runs before Kalen Culpepper hit a three-run shot to left center.

That made it a 21-13 game in favor of Kansas State. However, Kansas made things interesting again after scoring five runs in the final two innings before running out of gas. It was a wild game that I will certainly remember for awhile as Kansas State won 21-18 and completed a three-game sweep over Kansas.

Best Win

#19 Texas over Baylor

The Longhorns needed a win on Sunday to take the series against Baylor after blowing a lead on Saturday. Texas found themselves down by a pair of runs in the seventh inning before Porter Brown and Rylan Galvan helped the Longhorns take a 6-5 lead.

Eric Kennedy provided a key insurance run in the eighth with his solo blast because Baylor ended up scoring in the bottom of that inning.

Luckily for Texas they were able to hang on for the win as they took the series. After Sunday’s results, the Longhorns now sit at the top of the Big 12 baseball standings.

Worst Loss

TCU

After tying up the series on Saturday, TCU fell flat on Sunday against UNC Wilmington. Cam Brown got the start and struggled early as he didn’t even last two full innings. The Seahawks scored seven runs in the first three innings, but the Horned Frogs were able to make it a two-run game after Brayden Taylor’s grand slam in the third inning. However, UNC Wilmington’s offense continued to stay hot as they scored five more runs throughout the game. The pitching for TCU was a total letdown this weekend as UNC Wilmington scored 31 runs in three games. This was a really tough series loss for the Horned Frogs as they look to bounce back sooner rather than later.

Sunday MVP

Kansas LF Chase Jans

I know his team lost but this man had nine RBIs on Sunday afternoon. He got his day started with a grand slam in the third inning and then drove in two more runs in the fourth. Chase also added two more RBIs in the sixth inning before getting his ninth RBI in the eighth. Despite the loss, I am sure it was a memorable day for Chase Jans. It’s not often you see a player with nine runs batted in.

Pitcher of the Day

Oklahoma LHP Braden Carmichael

Braden did an excellent job against a really good Texas Tech lineup on Sunday afternoon. He pitched a little over seven innings and allowed just one earned run, which is rare to do especially against the Red Raiders. Braden by far had the best pitching performance in the conference on Sunday.

Best Home Run

Oklahoma RF Bryce Madron

Bryce ended up hitting two home runs against Texas Tech and his last one in the eighth inning ended the game as the Sooners run ruled the Red Raiders.
