Big 12 Baseball Power Rankings: Texas Ascends to Top Spot

Conference play is here as we just wrapped up another week of the season. It was a busy weekend full of surprises and big moments.

Each week, Heartland College Sports will release its Big 12 baseball power rankings, and here are this week’s rankings.

1. Texas Longhorns (Last Week #2)

The Longhorns currently are at the top of the Big 12 standings after leaving Waco with a series win on Sunday. While the pitching wasn’t great outside of Lucas Gordon, Texas found a way to get the job done with their offense which seems to be getting better each week. I think it is finally time for some people to start buying into this team.

2. Texas Tech Red Raiders (Last Week #3)

Despite getting run-ruled on Sunday, Texas Tech managed to take two out of three against the Sooners is Norman which isn’t always easy. We know the Red Raiders will score a bunch of runs and sometimes that is perfectly ok to do against just about any team you play. If they can get a little more consistent on the mound, then this team may end up hosting a regional.

3. West Virginia Mountaineers (Last Week #6)

If anybody needed a bounce-back weekend it was West Virginia, and they certainly did just that. The Mountaineers took the first two games of the series against Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Their pitching looked much better, and this offense is starting to get hot again. Now I just want to see them build off of what they just did this past weekend.

4. Oklahoma State Cowboys (Last Week #1)

The time has finally come to drop Oklahoma State down. After falling to TCU two weekends ago, the Cowboys lost their series against West Virginia this past weekend. Much like Texas Tech, they have the offense to beat anybody, but their pitching has really struggled lately.

5. Kansas State Wildcats (Last Week #8)

Is this where Kansas State finally turns the corner? This team has shown flashes at times this season of being really good but ultimately falling short. However, that didn’t happen against Kansas because they completed a three-game sweep over their in-state rival.

6. TCU Horned Frogs (Last Week #4)

After taking down Oklahoma State, TCU fell flat on its face at home against UNC Wilmington. The Horned Frogs have relied on some great pitching this season to win games and that didn’t happen against the Seahawks. TCU’s rotation collapsed as they gave up a ton of runs and lost the series.

7. Kansas Jayhawks (Last Week: #5)

I thought Kansas would be able to build off a big series win against West Virginia, but I was wrong. The Jayhawks ended up getting swept by their in-state rival and gave up a ton of runs in the process. I know this team can score runs but at some point, they need to do better on the mound.

8. Baylor Bears (Last Week: #7)

I dropped the Bears down one spot after falling short against Texas. Baylor had their chance to take down take Texas several times on Sunday but couldn’t get the job done.

9. Oklahoma Sooners (Last Week: #9)

The good news is that Oklahoma run-ruled Texas Tech on Sunday. The bad news is that they lost the series in the first two games. This team is way too talented to have a conference record of 4-8 and an overall record of 19-18.

10. Iowa State Cyclones (Last Week: 10)

I will not move Iowa State until they bring back baseball!
