T.J. Otzelberger and the Iowa State Cyclones added a nice player in the preferred walk-on department this week, with Waukee (Iowa) Northwest guard Cade Kelderman announcing he’s jumped into the fold.

“Yeah, throughout this whole recruiting process, my main thing was trying to follow my heart,” Kelderman told CycloneAlert’s Nick Osen. “With everything that happened in my recruiting process and all of the coaches reaching out, my heart always came back to Iowa State. I’ve grown up a life-long fan, and so putting on the Cardinal and Gold is really a childhood dream.”

Kelderman had chances to play at both the NAIA and Junior College levels, as well as potentially for Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State. But making the move to Ames just seemed right, it would figure, and now that the decision is over for him, Kelderman admits he can take a deep breath.

“It’s kind of a huge sigh of relief, to get the whole recruiting process over with,” he told Osen. “I’m obviously really looking forward to getting on campus, but no, it felt great when I told the coaching staff I was coming there. They were thrilled to have me, so I am really excited.”

During his final season at Waukee Northwest, Kelderman averaged 16.7 points and 5.8 assists per game while shooting 58% from the floor, including 48% from 3-point range and 83% from the free throw line. As part of that, he exploded for 26 points and hit four treys in a Class 4A semifinal victory over rival Waukee, before the Wolves fell in the state title game.

Now he’ll bring that production to the Cyclones, looking to stamp out a spot in a walk-on role.
