Oklahoma Lands Pitt Transfer F John Hugley

Oklahoma men's basketball coach Porter Moser.

After Oklahoma’s roster was decimated by the transfer portal following a disappointing 2022-23 season, Porter Moser and the Sooners appear to have some momentum as OU has landed its second commitment of the week in former Pitt forward, John Hugley.

Hugley, listed at 6-9, 240 pounds, is coming off a season in which he appeared in just eight games before sitting out the remainder of the year to focus on his mental health.

In 2021-22, Hugley was a force for the Panthers, averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Now, Hugley will shift his focus to Oklahoma, where he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“I chose Oklahoma because it just felt like home,” Hugley told On3. “From the time Coach Porter first picked up the phone to call me, from the time I left campus, it was just all love. Coach Porter is an unbelievable coach and he loves to win and has took his teams to the highest levels. I also think coach does an unbelievable job with featuring his big man. I really think this team can make a really deep run come tournament time.”

Armon Gates, a new addition to the Sooners’ staff, also played a major role in the Sooners landing the big man out of Cleveland, Ohio.

“Coach Gates had a huge impact on me coming to Oklahoma. He did a great job recruiting me and we have a great relationship so that was major to me.”

Hugley chose Oklahoma over West Virginia, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, and others.

Porter Moser hopes that Hugley, and a host of other newcomers including Javian McCollum, will help him turn the Sooners around after finishing ninth in the Big 12 in 2022-23 with an overall record of 15-17.
