Baylor Softball on Facing Oklahoma: ‘They’re The Ones That Are Intimidated’

Baylor Softball

The top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners are in Waco this weekend and will hope to take a commanding lead in the Big 12 race with a series win over No. 19 Baylor.

That will be easier said than done though, as the Bears own the lone blemish on the Sooners record, which now stands at 39-1 through 40 games.

Back on February 19, just eight games into the 2023 season, the Bears took a 4-3 nonconference contest against Patty Gasso’s group, the first time Baylor had beaten the Sooners since 2017. It was also BU’s first win over a No. 1-ranked team since they beat top-ranked Florida back in 2009.

Now, with a three-game series against the Sooners on deck, Baylor’s Ana Watson says that her team isn’t feeling the pressure of facing OU, but rather, it should be Oklahoma that is intimidated coming into this contest.

“It gives us a cool little leg up this time,” Watson told KCEN6 News. “We’re 1-0, so I think they’re the ones that are a little intimidated at this point.”

Watson is the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week after hitting .438 with three home runs and a league-leading 12 RBIs on the week. Her teammate, Sydney Callazos, says that Baylor is focused on itself heading into this monumental series.

“The pressure is not on us this weekend,” Callazos says. “As Ana said, we have the upper hand. The pressure is on them to keep their No. 1 spot.”

Giving the Sooners bulletin board material is an interesting strategy as if they didn’t already have enough motivation coming into the weekend. Oklahoma is well-versed in handing out comeuppance, and will hop to do so again this weekend in front of a sold-out crowd at Getterman Stadium.
