Big 12 Baseball Sunday Six-Pack: West Virginia and Oklahoma State Complete Sweeps
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
Oklahoma State at Kansas
Since there were just three Big 12 games on Saturday, I didn’t have much to choose from. Oklahoma State took the first two games in their series against Kansas as they went for the sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Jayhawks got on the board first with a run in the first inning before Roc Riggio knocked in a pair of runs in the third inning.
From there the Cowboys would another run in the fourth inning and then piled it on in the fifth as Chase Adkison, Nolan Schubart, and Tyler Wulfert all drove in runs.
After David Mendham’s RBI in the seventh inning, Oklahoma State had a seven-run lead and would hold on for the win. With their victory on Sunday, they were able to complete the sweep over Kansas in Lawrence.
Best Win
West Virginia Over TCU
How about the West Virginia Mountaineers? After winning the first two games against TCU, they had the chance to complete the sweep on Sunday. Thanks to some mistakes by TCU, West Virginia scored a couple of runs first before the Horned Frogs got a run on the board in the second inning.
Grant Hussey knocked in a run in the third inning, but it was the fourth inning that ended up being big for West Virginia. The Mountaineers scored a whopping eight runs in that inning which was highlighted by a JJ Wetherholt three-RBI double. Despite TCU scoring six runs in the next two innings, West Virginia roared back by adding six more runs of their own in the seventh inning. The game ended when Tevin Tucker brought in a run to give his team a run-rule victory. Break out the brooms Mountaineer fans.
Worst Loss
Kansas State
The Wildcats didn’t have a great day out in California as they lost by six runs to UC Irvine, but they did manage to take the first two games of the series. While completing a sweep would have been nice, at least they were able to win the series.
Sunday MVP
West Virginia DH JJ Wetherholt
For those who follow Big 12 baseball know who JJ Wetherholt is. He is one of the best hitters in college baseball and he had a big day on Sunday. JJ had four RBIs as he had a three-RBI double in the fourth inning and then added another RBI in the seventh.
Pitcher of the Day
Oklahoma State RHP Bayden Root
Bayden came to relieve Carson Benge in the fourth inning and did a fantastic job filling in. He pitched four full innings and didn’t give up a single run. Bayden allowed just two hits and struck out five batters during his time on the mound.
Best Home Run
West Virginia 1B Grant Hussey
Grant hit a three-run bomb in the seventh inning that helped West Virginia run-rule TCU on Sunday.
