Five-Star Transfer PG Max Abmas Announces Transfer to Texas

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament First Round-Oral Roberts vs Duke

Former five-star and Oral Roberts transfer point guard Max Abmas is transferring to Texas, he announced Thursday evening on Twitter.

Abmas is the NCAA’s active total points leader and was the top overall scorer in college basketball in 2020-21. Over the span of his career, Abmas has averaged nearly 21 points per game, and has averaged 23 points per game over the last three seasons.

With Abmas running point, the ORU Golden Eagles were 30-5 in 2022-23, and went a perfect 18-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagles made the NCAA Tournament this season as a No. 12 seed but were eliminated by Duke in the Round of 64.

Now in Austin, he’ll immediately elevate Texas’ offensive production. And it comes at a great time, with Marcus Carr having exhausted all of his eligibility, and Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh on the way out as well, meaning there’s some extra room in the backcourt.

“He’s the franchise, the face of the program, the kind of guy you give the keys to the car,” a team source told Horns247 about Abmas, per the site’s Jeff Howe. The source added that the Texas staff has long loved Abmas’ game and made him a priority the minute his name popped up in the transfer portal.

“They wanted him no matter what the rest of the roster looked like.”

Certainly, Abmas’ production speaks to that. And the Longhorns indeed have him aboard.
