Former Iowa State Players React to Jets Landing Another Cyclone in Will McDonald

Former Iowa State DE Will McDonald lived up to his billing as a first-round talent after being drafted with the 15th overall pick to the New York Jets on Thursday night.

McDonald was a standout defender in the Big 12 over the past several seasons and was part of a trio of pass rushers from the conference that had their names called in the first round, joining Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson and Kansas State’s Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

McDonald will get to see some familiar faces in New York too, joining former Iowa State running back Breece Hall, who was taken early in the second round of last year’s draft by the Jets, and WR Allen Lazard, who was recently picked up after five seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Hall and Lazard, as well as other former Cyclones, were excited about the Jets’ newest addition.

McDonald is the first first-round pick out of Iowa State since 1973 when the Houston Oilers selected George Amundsen with the 14th pick.

With elite bend and quickness off the edge, his skills as a pass rusher should translate well at the next level, giving Iowa State fans plenty to be excited about when it comes to watching the New York Jets in 2023.
