Saturday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: West Virginia Takes Series While Texas Tech Takes Game Two Against Kansas State

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Saturday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Oklahoma State at Michigan

The Cowboys are taking a break from Big 12 action as they made the trip north to Michigan. After Friday’s game was cancelled, these two teams decided to make this a two-game series instead of three. Oklahoma State got on the board first thanks to a David Mendham RBI before Michigan tied the game with a solo home run.

Both teams would trade runs a couple of times before Oklahoma State took the lead back in the seventh inning when Zach Ehrhard drove in a run.

Marcus Brown would add an insurance run in that same inning. From there the Cowboys were able to keep the Wolverines scoreless as they took game one with a 5-3 win.

Best Win

#18 West Virginia Over Baylor

After taking game one on Friday night, the West Virginia Mountaineers had a chance to take the series on Saturday afternoon. It was a slow game as West Virginia had a 1-0 lead going into the seventh inning. The scoring started when JJ Wetherholt hit a solo blast in the seventh inning before a few mistakes by Baylor helped West Virginia get two more runs across.

The Mountaineers were able to add some insurance runs in the ninth inning as Grant Hussey went deep and thanks to a few more Baylor mistakes on the mound. West Virginia dominated game two with a big ten run victory as they took the series in the first two games.

Worst Loss

Baylor

I know that West Virginia is a good team but going scoreless at home and losing by ten runs is completely unacceptable. Yes, the Bears held the Mountaineers to just a single run for over half the game but to not score any runs is a little embarrassing. Baylor now has to win on Sunday to avoid being swept at home.

Saturday MVP

Oklahoma CF John Spikerman

John had a big day against Kansas on Saturday. He hit a three-run blast in the third inning and then went yard again in the seventh inning with a two-run homer.

Pitcher of the Day

West Virginia RHP Blaine Traxel

We just talked to Blaine in a recent interview about pitching complete games and he just had another one on Saturday against Baylor. Blaine pitched nine full innings and didn’t allow a single run, which is incredible. This was his fifth complete game of the season, which is unheard of now days.

Best Home Run

Texas Tech SS Tracer Lopez

Tracer hit a big two-run shot in the sixth inning that helped Texas Tech take down Kansas State on Saturday.
