West Virginia RB Tony Mathis Enters Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Kansas State at West Virginia

Neal Brown and the West Virginia Mountaineers need to turn things around in a big way this season, but the chances of that happening took a significant hit on Monday as starting running back Tony Mathis announced that he will enter the transfer portal.

Although he missed some time in 2022, Mathis started in all 10 games that he appeared in. His career-high 163 yards and two touchdowns against Baylor earned him Big 12 Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, and showed just what he was capable of as a bellcow running back.

Mathis was West Virginia’s leading rusher in 2022 with 562 yards and five touchdowns on 135 carries, but the backfield became very crowded with CJ Donaldson and Jaylen Anderson emerging.

Now, with Mathis leaving, West Virginia loses its most experienced player in the room and a trustworthy ball carrier going into a difficult season.

“This decision was the toughest because of the guys I had next to me on and off the field. The bond and love I have for y’all is forever,” he wrote.

Over four seasons, Mathis totaled 943 rushing yards and six touchdowns with the Mountaineers but will use his final two seasons of eligibility as a grad transfer somewhere else. His entry into the portal comes as a surprise to many, but leaves CJ Donaldson as the top returner at running back.

Donaldson racked up 526 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns through seven games in 2022 before suffering a season-ending leg injury against TCU.
