Friday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: Kansas Upsets Texas While West Virginia Takes Down Oklahoma

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Friday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Texas Tech vs Sam Houston State

Going into this series, I knew it was going to be a high scoring one. Both teams hit the ball extremely well but both teams also struggle on the mound. We saw that play out on Friday night as there was a big shootout in Lubbock. The Bearkats took a quick 3-0 lead before Texas Tech woke up and scored six runs in the second inning.

Sam Houston State would go on to score in several innings and eventually took a three-run lead going into the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of that inning, Gavin Kash hit a big three-run homer to tie the game at nine.

The Bearkats took the lead back in the next inning but that didn’t last long because the Red Raiders had a big eighth inning to recapture the lead.

Drew Woodcox tied the game with his single before Zac Vooletich and Dylan Maxcey gave Tech a two-run lead that helped them win the game.

Best Win

Kansas over Texas

I have seen Lucas Gordon pitch plenty of times this season, but I have never seen him struggle like he did on Friday night. Lucas is the best pitcher in the Big 12 and he gave up five earned runs and lasted just a little over four innings on the mound. A passed ball put Kansas on the board first before Chase Jans hit a solo blast to make it 2-0.

Texas would take the lead in the fifth inning, but Kansas didn’t go away easily as they scored five runs in the inning which was highlighted by Janson Reeder’s two-run homer. The Jayhawks would add another run in the sixth inning and another in the eight as they took game one with a 10-4 victory over Texas.

Worst Loss

Texas

I hate to talk about the same game twice here but Texas losing to Kansas was quite the upset. The Longhorns are still in the Big 12 title hunt and losing a game where your best pitcher starts is very concerning. While Kansas does have a few solid bats in their lineup, there is no excuse for Texas losing by six runs to this team. This is a series the Longhorns should win with ease and now they are just one more bad game away from dropping the series and potentially blowing their Big 12 title hopes.

Friday MVP

Texas Tech 1B Gavin Kash

Gavin has been an MVP all season long for the Red Raiders and he came up big once again against Sam Houston State on Friday night. He drove in a run in the second inning before hitting a three-run shot in the sixth.

Pitcher of the Day

Kansas State LHP Owen Boerema

After a few rocky starts, Owen looked fantastic on Friday evening against SEMO. He pitched a little over seven innings and allowed just one run while striking out four batters. Owen has been Kansas State’s ace this season and the Wildcats will need these types of performances from him if they want to make the postseason.

Best Home Run

Kansas DH Janson Reeder

Janson’s two-run bomb put Kansas in front of Texas as the Jayhawks never looked back and took game one.
