OU Board of Regents Makes SEC Move in 2024 Official

NCAA Football: SEC Media Days

The Oklahoma Sooners long-awaited transition to the SEC has officially been confirmed by the school’s Board of Regents which is set to leave the Big 12 Conference on June 30th, 2024, and join its new home in the SEC on July 1st, 2024.

With Texas and Oklahoma jumping ship and joining the SEC, the final days of each program’s affiliation and membership with the Big 12 Conference are officially underway.

With the Big 12 Conference losing two key members in Oklahoma and Texas, many believed the conference could struggle to generate buzz and viewership numbers in the long term. With the perfect commissioner at the helm in Brett Yormark, the Big 12 Conference hit a speed boost toward the top by adding the likes of Houston, UCF, BYU, and Cincinnati to the league.

Texas and Oklahoma both were originally slated to leave the conference in 2025, but after agreeing to an early exit buyout of $100 million dollars, the Sooners and Longhorns are leaving the conference one year earlier than expected.

While the departure is officially on the calendar for the Sooners, the Longhorns announcement should follow suit in the coming weeks. With just one year of football and basketball remaining in the Big 12 for both programs, the quest to go out on top begins now.
