Big 12 Basketball Eyeing Conference Games in Early November at Neutral Site

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Championship-Iowa State vs West Virginia

The Big 12 Conference continues to think outside the box. Whether it’s college football games in Mexico, or now the idea in-conference college basketball games in November, the league is putting together plans that are unique to college sports.

VP of Big 12 men’s basketball Jim Williams joined The Houston Roundball Review with Kris Gardner and said the Big 12 is exploring having some in-conference games in early November involving teams who are only slated to play each other once during conference play.

Williams add the plan would be to, “Play four or five games and kind of tip off the year and show some of our talent early on.”

He added that these games would not count towards the conference record of the participating teams. As for where the games would be played, Williams said the league is looking at playing this Preseason Tip-Off at a neutral site location and that the league is trying to “work out those parameters right now.”

The Big 12 Conference should be the best conference in the country in 2023-24. The league was the deepest in the country last season, with seven teams making the 2023 NCAA Tournament, and now adds the Houston Cougars, who have been one of the best programs in the season in recent years.

The Big 12, led by Brett Yormark, continues to think innovatively about how to brand this league. Typically, November and December are a wash for college hoops, as the focus remains on football. But if the Big 12 can put itself on the map with an early-season event, it will continue to grow the basketball brand in a positive light.
