Sunday Big 12 Baseball Six-Pack: West Virginia and Oklahoma State Take Series

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Texas Tech at #12 West Virginia

With the series tied, Sunday was a rubber match to determine the series winner. The Red Raiders got on the board first thanks to Kevin Bazzell and Tracer Lopez who helped Tech get out to a 2-0 lead. Grant Hussey was the man who drove in West Virginia’s first run, but Tevin Tucker was the guy who tied the game at two in the third inning.

Once again Tracer Lopez knocked in another run for Texas Tech to take the lead but J.J. Wetherholt tied the game right back up with his big solo blast in the fifth inning. This game turned in the sixth inning when Caleb McNeely hit a two-run homer to put West Virginia on top 5-3.

There was some late inning drama as Texas Tech had the bases loaded in the eighth inning, but West Virginia held on. With the win, the Mountaineers take the series and are one step closer to a Big 12 regular season title.

Best Win

Oklahoma State Over Kansas State

After crushing Kansas State on Saturday, Oklahoma State continued their reign of terror on Sunday. Nolan Schubart hit a three-run bomb to get the game started to put Oklahoma State up 3-0. The Wildcats would score a run in the third inning but that didn’t help much because the Cowboys would go on to score seven runs in that inning. Tyler Wulfert, Chase Adkison, David Mendham, Marcus Brown, and Zach Ehrhard all came up with key hits that helped Oklahoma State pull away.

The Cowboys would add two more runs as they never looked back for the rest of the game. It was a huge win for Oklahoma State as they remain in the Big 12 title hunt.

Worst Loss

It’s been a rough weekend for the Bears as they were swept by TCU. Saturday’s loss eliminated Baylor from the Big 12 tournament which means next weekend will be their last weekend of baseball until 2024.

Sunday MVP

Oklahoma State LF Nolan Schubart

Nolan hit a big three-run bomb in the first inning that set the tone for Oklahoma State’s big win over Kansas State.

Pitcher of the Day

Oklahoma LHP James Hitt

James pitched a gem on Sunday afternoon against Gonzaga. He pitched seven full innings and allowed just one run while striking out five batters during his time on the mound.

Best Home Run

West Virginia 2B J.J. Wetherholt

This home run by J.J. tied the game in the fifth inning. Game after game, this man comes up big time in key moments. This is why he is in the running for the Golden Spikes Award.
