Ashley Joens Makes Final Cut For Dallas Wings Roster

Ashley Joens made the final roster for the WNBA’s Dallas Wings and will begin the season on Saturday when they host the Atlanta Dream at noon.
The former Iowa State Cyclones star was one of three rookies to make the Wings’ final 12-player roster. Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist and UConn’s Lou Lopez Sénéchal also made the roster.
Both were first-round picks last month. The Wings took Joens in the second round, No. 19 overall.
The Wings also drafted Joens’ Iowa State teammate, center Stephanie Soares, in the first round. But Soares is likely to miss the season as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in January.
Joens, a two-time All-American and three-time recipient of the Cheryl Miller Award, recently wrapped up one of the greatest college careers in Division I women’s basketball. The Iowa City, Iowa, native, finished her career ninth all-time in Division I history with 3,060 points. Joens averaged 21.6 points and 9.7 rebounds as a senior.
This past season, Joens led the Cyclones to a Big 12 Tournament championship, the program’s first in more than 20 years. She was also named the Big 12 Player of the Year in both the preseason and the postseason.
Making the team means that Joens will likely cross paths with another Iowa State legend at some point this season. Bridget Carleton is with the Minnesota Lynx. She was a second-round pick in 2019.
The Wings will play Minnesota four times this season, with Dallas hosting on May 30.
