The era of Bill Self being the only picture-worthy head coach in Lawrence is officially over as Lance Leipold continues to revamp the Jayhawks football program.
At a recent event in Lawrence for alumni, fundraisers, and fans, one fan asked legendary head basketball coach Bill Self to step out of the way so he could have a one-on-one picture with football coach Lance Leipold, prompting a funny reaction from the HOF coach.
Since taking over for the Jayhawks in blank Leipold has changed the narrative surrounding Kansas football. He took a team with 17 total wins in the decade before he got there to their first bowl game since the 2008 season. While finishing 6-7 in the 2022 season still leaves room for improvement, the turnaround that Leipold made in a short time has been nothing short of incredible for the Jayhawks.
Leipold enters the 2023 season with a returning quarterback under center in Jalon Daniels who found his name in Heisman conversations prior to some key injuries last season. He also boasts the nation’s 62nd-ranked class of incoming freshmen as well as the 42nd-ranked class of transfer portal players courtesy of 247Sports. While I don’t expect Bill Self to step out of many more photos going forward, Lance Leipold has more than earned his right for a solo shot.
