Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire Names Tyler Shough Starting Quarterback

Texas Tech Red Raiders fans now officially know who will be taking snaps at QB1 in the upcoming season after head coach Joey McGuire announced that senior quarterback Tyler Shough would be the starter in Lubbock.

While Shough has had some injury issues and inconsistent play over the past couple of seasons, he enters the 2023 season as the starter following a quarterback battle with sophomore quarterback Behren Morton.

Head coach Joey McGuire spoke on the quarterback battle and detailed what gave Shough the edge in the matchup saying, “I think the way he ended the season, being 4-and-0, his grasp of the offense,” McGuire said. “If you look at the spring last year, Shough’s completion rate was 62 percent. He went to 72 percent this year in the spring.”

He continued to praise both Shough and Morton by highlighting the lack of conversation from members of the media surrounding each of his quarterbacks saying, “What’s crazy is Texas Tech quarterbacks are not being talked about,” McGuire said, “And it’s almost, to me just laziness. I’ve got two guys, I think both of them are going to play on Sunday. And our guys have won games in Power-Five football, and it’s not that they have five stars behind them or they have a name behind them. Our guys have actually done it in games, so it’s not like the potential good. They are good.”

In 2022, Shough completed 60% of his passes, throwing for over 1,300 yards with seven touchdowns to four interceptions. As McGuire noted, the end of his season included a 4-0 finish, highlighted by an overtime win against Oklahoma, where the former Oregon transfer threw for 436 yards and two touchdowns. In a bowl win against Ole Miss, Shough threw for 242 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for over 100 yards with two scores.

Shough and the Red Raiders kick their season off on September 2nd against Wyoming.
