Anonymous Big 12 Coach on Joey McGuire: ‘This One is Still an Experiment’

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at North Carolina State

Anonymous coaching reports are anonymous for a reason, and with a recent report from an anonymous Big 12 coach, Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire received some shots from his colleagues.

With Athlon Sports in the trenches uncovering what each Big 12 coach has to say about one another, today’s anonymous report about Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders is a bit of a doozie.

“For all of the Texas high school coaching hires [head coach Joey McGuire was a high school coach as recently as 2016], I think this one is still an experiment. It’s still hard to tell. That’s not on Joey — he’s done a really solid job there so far — it’s just that they’re still not a high-end Big 12 roster. They’re still in the middle of the road, and you can see it getting off the bus. … The offense will have a really good year; they’ve basically got everybody back, but they’re used to that kind of performance. Having a good offense alone isn’t why they hired that guy.”

Is this a bit harsh? Maybe. Is it unjustified? Not necessarily.

To the anonymous coach’s credit, the report isn’t all that far off. While Joey McGuire brings in a different energy that the Red Raiders football team hasn’t had since Kliff Kingsbury left the program, he wasn’t brought in to “revamp” a historically underwhelming program. The Red Raiders football team has had numerous head coaches who have fit the mold of a solid coach, but McGuire was brought in to be so much more than that.

While McGuire has done some good things in Lubbock so far, bringing in the 27th-ranked recruiting class in the nation and finishing his first season at head coach with a record of 8-5, good for fourth place in the Big 12, the jury is still out, as it should be, only one season into the job for McGuire and his staff.

Texas Tech enters the 2023 season with momentum building as the Red Raiders quietly become a Big 12 dark horse in the eyes of man. The Red Raiders open the season on September 2nd against Wyoming at 6:30 PM.
